Auditing in India: More Than a GMP Checklist
International supplier audits are rarely just about procedures, batch records, or CAPA systems. They are also about context. And few countries demonstrate this more clearly than India.
India is one of the world’s most important pharmaceutical manufacturing hubs. Many highly capable and globally experienced sites operate there. At the same time, audits in India often require something beyond technical GMP knowledge:
cultural intelligence, adaptability, and calm observation.
The Audit Starts Before The Site Visit
In some countries, punctuality, direct language, and linear agendas are standard. In India, business interactions can be more relationship-driven and flexible.
This does not mean unprofessional. It means the auditor must understand that trust and respect often shape the flow of the day.
An aggressive “Western-style interrogation approach” can close doors quickly. A respectful but firm professional tone usually works far better.
The Famous Head Wobble
Many first-time visitors notice the well-known Indian head movement, sometimes called the head wobble.
To outsiders, it can be confusing.
Does it mean:
yes
maybe
I understand
I hear you
I acknowledge you
Sometimes it means several of these at once.
For auditors, this matters. Never assume confirmation from body language alone.
Use clear follow-up questions such as:
Can you please confirm the current practice?
Is this procedure implemented today?
Who owns this action?
May I see an example?
Clarity beats assumptions.
Communication: “Yes” May Mean “I Understand”
One common misunderstanding in cross-cultural audits is hearing “yes” and assuming agreement or completion.
In some contexts, “yes” may simply mean:
I hear your question.
That is why evidence-based auditing is essential.
Not:
“Yes, we do that.”
But:
Please show me the record.
Please explain the workflow.
Please demonstrate the control.
Traffic, Timing, and Reality
Anyone who has visited cities such as Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, or Visakhapatnam knows that road traffic can be intense and unpredictable.
Travel buffers are not optional. They are part of the audit plan.
A 12-kilometre journey can take far longer than expected. Horns, density, mixed traffic, and changing flow patterns are part of the environment.
Experienced auditors stay calm, leave early, and do not begin the day already stressed.
Climate and Physical Energy Matter
India can be demanding physically, especially for visitors arriving from cooler climates.
Depending on region and season:
heat
humidity
dust
long travel days
heavy meals
dehydration
can reduce sharpness.
That matters during multi-day audits.
Good preparation includes:
hydration
sleep discipline
realistic scheduling
lighter meals during audit days
proper recovery in evenings
Fatigue creates weak judgement.
Hospitality and Professional Distance
Indian hosts are often exceptionally welcoming and generous.
That is positive. But auditors must maintain professional independence.
Warm hospitality should never weaken objective judgement.
The best balance is:
respectful
appreciative
independent
consistent
What Strong Auditors Do Differently
Successful audits in India usually come from professionals who combine:
Technical Strength
EU GMP, FDA, supplier oversight, data integrity.
Cultural Awareness
Communication style, hierarchy, indirect responses, relationship sensitivity.
Personal Discipline
Travel planning, stamina, emotional control.
Practical Focus
Observe reality, not only presentations.
India Is Not “One Thing”
This is important.
India is not a single homogeneous business culture. Differences can exist between:
states
cities
family-owned firms
multinational sites
older facilities
export-driven operations
Avoid stereotypes. Audit the site in front of you.
Final Thought
Some of the most capable, professional, and globally competitive pharmaceutical manufacturers operate in India.
But success there requires more than flying in with a checklist.
It requires reading people, context, systems, and reality at the same time.
That is where experienced international auditors create real value.
